The Viz Media dub of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn?, lit. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon), is the second English localization of the Sailor Moon series. The Viz Media in-house dub of Sailor Moon’s is a unabridged localization of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. Names for characters, locations and other content originally cut for time or deemed inappropriate for children or "Americanized" in the original localization by Optimum Productions, for DiC, Pioneer Entertainment and Cloverway Inc., are retained.

Viz Media's English localization of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, debuted on Hulu and Viz Media's Neon Alley on May 19, 2014. it was streamed on a weekly basis until April 11, 2016. Viz Media has since continued to release Viz's English localization of the series in two-part DVD and Blu-ray sets.

New English Distribution[]

May 16, 2014, North American manga and anime distributor Viz Media announced that they acquired the entire Sailor Moon series, as well as the three films and specials for an English-language re-release in North America.[1] The series began streaming on Neon Alley and Hulu in the United States on May 19, 2014 and released the first edited remastered and bilingual Blu-ray and DVD set, containing 13 episodes in Fall 2014.

Similarly sized sets followed in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The same year, Viz Media announced that they would produce an English localization for Sailor Moon Crystal. July 5, 2014, Viz Media held a special panel for "Sailor Moon Day" at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles, California.

There, they revealed the new cast of voice actors for the new localization of the first season of Sailor Moon, which included the likes of Johnny Young Bosch. They also announced plans to distribute a limited edition Blu-Ray box set of the first season November 2014, with special purchase incentives from Rightstuff.com.

A completely new cast was used for the Viz Media Sailor Moon dub. May 16, 2014 they announced the main cast which included: Stephanie Sheh as Usagi Tuskino/Sailor Moon, Kate Higgins as Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury, Cristina Vee as Rei Hino/Sailor Mars, Amanda C. Miller as Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter, Cherami Leigh as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus, Michelle Ruff as Luna, Johnny Young Bosch as Artemis and new comer Robbie Daymond as Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask.

Sandy Fox and Veronica Taylor would join the cast in Sailor Moon R as Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon and Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto. Erica Mendez and Lauren Landa were cast as Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus and Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune for Sailor Moon S, with Christine Marie Cabanos rounding out the Sailor Guardians as Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn.

Melissa Hutchinson, Erika Harlacher, and Sarah Anne Williams would be the first official English voices for the Sailor Starlights.

Streaming Sites[]

All four seasons of Sailor Moon that were originally broadcast in the United States under the licence of DiC, Pioneer Entertainment, and Cloverway Inc., were officially released on Hulu and Neon Alley on Monday, May 19, 2014, subtitled with the original Japanese audio.[2]

The first four episodes of the first season's new English dub was released for free on the aforementioned streaming sites. Both Hulu and Neon Alley, broadcast two episodes of the first season every Monday from May 2014 to October 2014.[3][note 1]

The English dub for the second season, Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R, was later broadcast in fourteen to eight-episode chunks from April 2015[4], May 2015[5] and later July 2015 on Friday.[6] Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R are the only two seasons that were streamed every Monday with Viz's English dub from 2014 and 2015 respectively.[7] Hulu.com has since become a paid service website[8], while Viz Media's Neon Alley remains a free streaming site. The Viz Media dubs for Sailor Moon were also made available for free on Hulu's affiliate site, Yahoo! View.[8]

The DVD and Blu-Ray release of Pretty Solider Sailor Moon was November 15, 2014[9][10] and February 10, 2015.[11] Special features included a behind the scenes featurette on the recording sessions, art galleries, and a featurette on the Anime Expo convention.[9] Default languages include English and Japanese with English subtitles.

The first part of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R was released July 14, 2015.[12] and the second part on October 27, 2015.[13] The first part of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon S was released on Blu Ray and DVD November 15, 2016[14] and the second part was released later June 20, 2017.[15][9]The first part of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon SuperS was released April 24, 2018.[16] and the second part was released on November 13, 2018.[17]The first part of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Sailor Stars was released June 18, 2019.[18] and the second part is set to Release later November 12, 2019 [19]

On June 14, 2022 Sailor Moon: The Complete First Season was released[20], a budget Blu-ray containing the entire first season with Japanese and English audio. New upgraded video was used for this release, with additonal special features. Viz Media would follow this up with Sailor Moon R: The Complete Second Season on February 28, 2023[21], Sailor Moon S: The Complete Third Season on July 25, 2023[22], and Sailor Moon SuperS: The Complete Fourth Season on January 30, 2024.[23]
