Michelle Kaiou (海王みちる Kaiō Michiru?) is one of three Outer Sailor Scouts and a supporting character in Sailor Moon S. In the 20th century of pre-Crystal Tokyo, Michelle and her partner, Amara Tenou search for the Pure Heart Crystal that will lead them to the Purity Chalice. Michelle is the reincarnation of the Princess of Neptune and the civilian identity of Sailor Neptune. Like Sailor Mercury, Neptune's powers are associated with the element of water.

Early Life

Sailor Moon S

Sailor Neptune and her partner Sailor Uranus appeared to stop the Bureau of Bad Behavior, led by Doctor Tomoe, from using the Silence to destroy the world. They were searching for three specific Pure Hearts to make the Purity Chalice appear so they could stop them, even though they knew that the ones with the Pure Hearts would die from being separated from them for too long. For this reason, the Sailor Scouts did not get along well with them, plus they preferred to work alone.

In the first episode, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus destroyed the first Daimon, Mikusi. She first appeared as Michelle in Episode 3, "Driving Dangerously".

In "Destiny's Arrival", it is revealed that she and Sailor Uranus have two of the three Pure Heart Crystals. Eugeal extracted her Pure Heart, which took the form of the Deep Aqua Mirror. Later, Sailor Pluto returned the Pure Hearts to them, separating them from the saber and the mirror.

They still refused to work together with the Sailor Scouts, and wanted to destroy Hotaru when they found out she was possessed by Mistress 9. They fought Germatoid when he left Doctor Tomoe, and were losing until their Pure Heart items appeared. Sailor Neptune used the Deep Aqua Mirror to immobilize all the fake Germatoids, allowing Sailor Uranus to finish Germatoid off.

After the defeat of Pharaoh 90, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus fought Sailor Moon, believing that she should not be the future queen. In the end, a light shone from Sailor Moon's tiara causing Sailor Uranus to crash into Sailor Neptune. From here, they recognized her as their ruler, and it is implied that Sailor Moon is the Sovereign after all.

  • Amara and Michelle never appear in the fourth season, Sailor Moon SuperS. They only appear in its film, Black Dream Hole alongside Trista (who was also absent in the fourth season).
  • In 1998 the toy company Irwin released a collection of Sailor Moon dolls that featured Sailor Neptune. Sailor Neptune was given the name "Nerissa", however, as DiC did not produce the third season, Sailor Moon S, the name Nerissa was never used.[2]
  • "Michelle" is the feminine spelling of the French and Hebrew name "Michael", meaning "Who is like God?".[3][4]
  • Barbara Radecki (Sailor Neptune) and Sarah LaFleur recorded their lines together during the production of Sailor Moon S.[5]
  • Barbara Radecki also voices Serena's mother, Ikuko Tsukino.
  • When Megumi Ogata, Haruka's voice actress, asked Kunihiko Ikuhara how she was supposed to portray Haruka and Michiru's relationship, she was told to act as if they were a married couple.[2]
    • Michiru owns her own helicopter that she calls the Kaio Maru.
    • Michiru is capable of using the Deep Aqua Mirror without needing to become Sailor Neptune.
    • Michiru's apartment number in the Infinity arc is "1306". If

one removes the "1", they will get "306", the numbers of her birthday. (Michiru's birthday is March 6, or 3-06)

    • As with the other members of the Outer Senshi, her surname is also the name of a rail line in Tokyo.
    • Michiru's skill with the violin extended to playing the instrument while simultaneously juggling a lemon.
    • Michiru and Haruka seemed to own a helicopter and could pilot it themselves. In the manga, Michiru had her own helicopter named the Kaioumaru (海王丸; Ocean King).
    • According to the Materials Collection, Michiru's character was influenced by the Takarazuka Revue.
    • Michiru seemed to possess some form of psychic ability that extended beyond intuition. She not only awakened as a Sailor Senshi on her own, she could apparently predict a Daimon attack, sensed Queen Nehellenia's presence, and could tell when Queen Nehellenia was using an illusion on her and Sailor Mars. Her talisman, the Deep Aqua Mirror, possibly enhanced or at least helped her with this ability.
      • Sailor Neptune seems to be the only one who awoke to her Senshi powers without the help of the moon cats (like the Inner Senshi) or the involvement of other Senshi (like Sailor Uranus or Sailor Saturn). According to her prologue in the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars singles, her memory awoke in the form of dreams.
      • Sailor Neptune and her partner Sailor Uranus were the only two Senshi apart from Sailor Moon to be involved in a long-lasting relationship in the canon.
      • Since it is not known how long Sailor Neptune was active as a Sailor Senshi before she appeared in the series, some fans have theorized that she could have been an active Senshi even before Sailor V or Sailor Moon.
      • Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus were said to be cousins in the Cloverway English dub of Sailor Moon, causing a stir and jokes of incest among fans.
      • In a 1996 interview with Animerica magazine, Naoko

Takeuchi stated that while "Sailor Moon is closest to me in terms of personality; Sailor Neptune is the opposite."

  • While not named, she was able to use her violin to create an unpleasant sound as an attack on the Senshi.
      • In Roman mythology, Neptune is the god of the sea.
      • Sailor Neptune's planetary symbol (♆) stands for the trident of the Roman god.
        • Her planetary symbol shows on the back of one of the Talismans, the hand mirror.
          • It is not known, why Sailor Venus did not get the hand mirror, as it represents her home planet and Roman goddess, but Sailor Neptune.
        • Neptunium is not symbolized by ♆, since in alchemy this planet was not known yet. It only carries the name of the planet.
      • She, along with the other Outer Senshi, possess one of the Talismans needed to summon the Holy Grail and awaken Sailor Saturn.
      • Sailor Neptune is one of the only Senshi (besides Sailor Mars) who possesses exceptionally strong psychic abilities and the only Outer Senshi who has such powers.
      • Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are the only members of the Sailor Senshi who's backstory of becoming a Sailor Senshi had never been revealed in the manga.
      • Super Sailor Neptune is eliminated and given bracelets from Galaxia in the manga. But in the anime's fifth and last season, she voluntary sells her own heart and soul to Galaxia, and is given her mind-controlling bracelets.
      • Eternal Sailor Neptune is on the cover art of volume eight of the reprinted manga. On the kanzenban manga, Sailor Neptune appears on the cover of volume 6 along with Sailor Uranus.

Sailor Neptune's character was not developed until partway through the Sailor Moon series, after the other Guardian Senshi had already been established. When she was created she was made along with Sailor Uranus, the pair was meant to be "complementary but opposite characters", and were meant to work along with Sailor Pluto from the beginning. Sailor Neptune's visual design is made to evoke images of her element, the ocean. The choice of her colours along with the wavy quality of her hair, which Takeuchi even joked, might be thought of as seaweed hair.

      • The kanji of Michiru's surname translate as "sea" (海 kai?) and "king" (王 ō?). Together, they constitute most of the name of the planet Neptune in Japanese, Kaiōsei (海王星?, "Sea King Star"). Her given name is in hiragana michiru (みちる?) and so its meaning is not inherent, but the word itself means "to rise" (満?).
